Day In The Life Of A Vice President Of Government And Community Relations

My Day to Day

My day is filled with connecting our campus with the community and elected officials. I review budget proposals from the federal and state governments, analyze their impact on our university, and work with our federal and state representatives to secure funding. I also collaborate with student government on advocacy initiatives and ensure alignment with our strategic plan focused on student success, diversity, and international programs.

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

    Inspired by my parents who were both bilingual education teachers, I developed a passion for learning and community service early on.

  • 2.

    I pursued my undergraduate degree in political science with an emphasis on international relations at UC Santa Barbara.

  • 3.

    My involvement in student government, radio, sports, and a multicultural sorority enriched my college experience.

  • 4.

    Shortly after graduation, I began an internship with Congressman George Brown Jr., working on NAFTA and science committee projects.

  • 5.

    I spent over 22 years at the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, dealing with federal, state, county, and local policy.

  • 6.

    In 2019, I became the first director of government relations for the Riverside Community College District, enhancing community connections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • 7.

    I am now the associate vice president for government community relations at Cal State San Bernardino, overseeing university advancement and community engagement.
