You'll never be a college recruit for football. You'll never be captain of the football team. You'll never make it far in life. Stop trying.
How I responded:
The most important part about overcoming noise is believing in yourself. When you believe in yourself you can do anything. Going into high school, I was not the most athletic kid nor did I possess many leadership qualities. I was just a kid who always had good grades but did not know what I wanted to pursue in my future. The "noise" was plentiful and it came in all directions, at times it would affect me a lot. Believing in yourself can help you get past all the noise and help you reach your goals.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
My parents have always tried to provide the best for me and my brothers but things don't always go your way. My parents had to sell our house and move into an apartment back when I was in high school and financially, things were always tough on us.
Before moving to New Jersey I lived in a low-income area in Brooklyn, New York.No one made that much of a living so gangs and violence was a part of life. Staying involved in sports and after school activities really helped me stay away from the bad.
My parents and I moved to this country when I was just 8 months old. We're from Ecuador and at the time the country was in chaos with very little opportunity to succeed. I thank my parents every day for deciding to move here where it's better.
As a first generation immigrant to this country, none of my family members had the opportunity to go to college. As a high school student, I made it my main goal to come out of high school going to college.
