My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
My teachers & guidance counselor pushed me to be great & become a 1st generation college student.
2.
Won the Ron Brown & Gates Millennium Scholarships which allowed me to afford college at UVA.
3.
Volunteered at UVA Career Services (exposed me to career counseling & campus recruiting).
4.
Earned HR certifications (PHR, CDR) which allowed me to transition to Human Resources.
5.
Joined HR associations (SHRM, NACE, NAAAHR) which allowed me to network with other professionals.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
I couldn't get admitted into nor afford college. I couldn't get into Corporate America because I was a liberal arts major. I couldn't get into my career choice (Human Resources) because I had no previous experience.
How I responded:
I overcame the first noise by surrounding myself with my personal "cheerleaders" (teachers, mentors, family). With their encouragement, I applied to many scholarships & colleges. I won many of those scholarships & got into UVA. I overcame the liberal arts major noise by talking with fellow liberal arts majors in business & recruiters who said I could do it, and I did. I transitioned from call center management to HR by earning HR credentials, networking & applying until I got a bite.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I surrounded myself around positive people who believed in me and I applied to many scholarships and colleges. Ultimately, I graduated from college 100% debt free.
