My path in life has been direct

2.
I continued to work with them in high school, and knew I wanted to do a year of service like them.
3.
In college, I didn't know what to major in, so I explored classes and chose sociology/politics.
4.
I participated in many clubs, service events, and travel opportunities to figure out my passions.
5.
After graduating, I worked for a year as an intern in the community service office at my school.
6.
I moved to DC to do a service year with AmeriCorps VISTA tutoring elementary kids.
7.
I got a 1 year position as the Eli Segal Fellow at CNCS, the federal agency that runs AmeriCorps.
8.
Because of my work with all types of service organizations, I got a position at Service Year.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Parents:
Community service is great, but when are you going to get a real job? How are you going to make money?
How I responded:
I think that my parents were nervous for me because I wasn't studying something that had a straight path to a career, like accounting or medicine or teaching. I assured them that I was gaining experiences and building a network that would help me through my whole life. I also proved to them that I was good at budgeting! They were ultimately very supportive when I showed them all the connections I was making.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
During my service year, I was supporting myself and the stipend was low. It was challenging, but it was worth the connections that got me a great job. It's important to look beyond the salary and see where it can take you in the future.
