You care too much about individuals, so you'll have a hard time managing people because you don't want to hurt their feelings by telling them bad news.
How I responded:
Managers are people who on an organization chart have others that report to them. Leaders are people that others want to follow—whether they directly report to them or not. Be a leader. Do this by setting an example, having open and honest conversations (both about good items and bad ones), and building personal relationships with those you lead. This provides a strong foundation for having those "difficult conversations" when they need to occur. And they will need to occur.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
For years a health condition kept from "being one of the guys"... I couldn't stay up late after the meetings were over, I didn't drink at dinners/events, etc.
