Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Teachers:

We do not need any more dumb people on the team!

  • How I responded:

My first term in college, I chased girls, ran track, was in a Fraternity and went to class in that order. My first term GPA was 0. My coach said, "We do not need any more dumb people on this team." I lost my scholarship and I quit school. I joined the Navy and got my priorities in order. After the Navy, I went back to college and received my AS in nursing, my BS in nursing and my master's in public administration while I was serving in the Air Force. In the AF, I became an Intelligence Analyst.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • I didn't know how to study and was never really pushed to go to college, therefore, I wasn't prepared for college. I found a way to prepare me to work hard and learned how to study while in the Navy. After I learned how to study, I had no problems.
